is it bad if my xbox 360 gets up to 1080p on my 720p TV?

I have a sanyo 26". And on there website it says it can reach up to 720p, however when i plug in my xbox using component cables and set it up to 1080p, it works! Could this be bad for my tv, and why would it be able to go higher then what it says it can do?

Thank you

It may appear that it is working, but if your tv says that it can only go up to 720p then i assure you that what you are seeing is not 1080p. What you are seeing is most likely 1080i, which is actually closer to 720p than 1080p. The i in 1080i stands for interlaced, which means that in order to display the picture, whats actually happening is your tv is leaving off every third line of resolution from the 1080p signal to allow it to be displayed. Its basically doing the same thing that an upconverting dvd player does to convert progressive scan (480p) resolution up to 720i, just in reverse (the player basically guesses every third line instead of leaving one off). Its not bad for your tv, but its also not displaying higher resolution than it says it can. Also, on a 26 inch you wont really notice the jump from 720p to 1080p as much as you did going when you went from whatever your previous res was (most likely 480p) to 720p. I wouldnt worry about going to 1080p on anything smaller than a 40inch

Impossible! It’ll show up at the highest quality your TV can reproduce… 720p. :)

The sound on your Tv will loose it’s sound. The 1080p on an 720p TV will not stand the sound, It
will for a day and a few but it will burn up the sound and soon enough,
the TV’s sound will be not there.
For a while, some of the sound will blank out then….the sound for the tv will just die out.
    happened to me.

resolution has nothing to do with sound…dont listen to him.

i also have this happening and through research, your TV is probably like mine…it will accept a 1080P signal and downscale it to 1080i. it is just telling you that it is receiving a 1080P signal…but you are probably just seeing 1080i (you wont notice the difference much between i and P on that screen.
