They are both first-tier brands. Sony makes a couple of lines of budget models that aren’t very good so you need to steer away from those. The Sony XBR9 series and Z series are top notch sets. Sanyo has thus far avoided entering the budget market, so all their sets enjoy a good reputation.

i think its a personal opinion
they are both the best in tvs followed by vizio
i personally think sony is a better brand
